A Special Thanksgiving Dinner: Children turn their school cafeteria into a soup kitchen to assist those in need

The Committee for Hispanic Children and Families (CHCF) and PS/MS 279

WHAT: The Committee for Hispanic Children and Families partners with PS/MS 279 the Captain Manuel Rivera School, and together are hosting a Community Soup Kitchen to provide the community with a very special Thanksgiving Dinner. City Councilmember Fernando Cabrera is confirmed to attend. In addition to dinner, the event will include a DJ and dancing. After-School program participants will be assisted by Youth Leaders who participate in CHCF’s Teen Pregnancy Prevention at Grace Dodge Campus in the Bronx.

WHEN: Tuesday, November 24, 2015 from 5 – 7pm

WHERE: PS/MS 279
2100 Walton Ave.
Bronx, NY 10453

WHY: This event began in 2005 as a community service project for middle school students in the program. The goal of this event is to provide a special meal for the elderly and homeless in the area around PS/MS 279. An unintended, but positive outcome, has been bridging the gap between different generations in the community. CHCF is a social service organization that believes education is the key through which families and communities can improve agency and social mobility. CHCF’s direct service programs in early education and youth development inform its policy and advocacy initiatives around language access and equity, parent engagement, and improved supports for early care and education.
