Fourth Annual Conference for Latino Child Care Providers

CHCF's Fourth Annual Conference for Latino Child Care Providers on Saturday, October 21, 2006 at Scholastic.  Participants were moved by guest speakers Arminda Figueroa, Project Director for Scholastic Entertainment, and Sonia Ivany, Regional Coordinator for Workforce Development for the New York State AFL-CIO and President of the NYC Central Chapter of the Labor Council for Latin American Advancement.

Designed for Spanish-speaking child care providers, who make up the majority of all providers in New York City, all workshops, speeched and materials were provided in Spanish.  The conference is the first of its kind, addressing the needs of the population, which we serve.

This event provides a valuable resource to Latino child care providers, allowing them to learn and elevate the services they provide.  Current and prospective providers are given the opportunity to network, learn about available resources and receive high-quality training.

Workshops included:

  • Effective and Successful Communication
  • Professionalism in Your Child Care Program
  • Development of Your Child Care Program
  • Working with Children with Special Needs

This year, CHCF also presented a scholarship to Diego Acero. Diego, a freshman in college, was selected for the scholarship by Sister Margaret Smyth, founder and director of the Spanish Apostolate in Riverhead. The event, co-chaired by Barbara Cashin and Margaret Myhan, was a huge success, raising nearly $40,000 for CHCF's programs and services.

2006 El Dia de los Niños Celebration

On Thursday, May 18, 2006 at The New York Times, The Committee for Hispanic Children and Families (CHCF) celebrated El Dia de los Niños with a special breakfast. CHCF organizes this annual event to introduce our organization and its programs to new corporate friends and to thank its existing corporate sponsors for supporting its services on behalf of the Latino children and families.

Univision News Anchor Denisse Oller served as MC for the event. Honorable Joel Rivera, Majority Leader of the New York City Council, provided a special introduction to keynote speaker Christine Quinn, Speaker of the New York City Council.

This year, Johnson & Johnson received CHCF’s Corporate MVP ( Most Valuable Partner) Award for the company's commitment to social responsibility and to improving the diverse communities in which they live and work.  It is reflected not only in theory company credo but exemplified by a number of key community initiatives.  Johnson & Johnson has a long established tradition of supporting on going health care, educational and cultural programs and has generously funded CHCF’s work for many years especially in the area of HIV/AIDS.

El Dia de Los Niños (The Day of the Children) is an event celebrated throughout Latin America.  Here in the United States El Dia de Los Niños has been adopted by a number of organizations and groups that are committed to the well-being of Latino children.
