2005-2006 Program Accomplishments

General

- CHCF directly served 16,000 children and families and indirectly served 36,000.  

- CHCF was asked to present on family involvement at the National Council of La Raza's national conference in July.

- CHCF was selected by the New York State 21st Century Program to present on family involvement at a statewide conference in December.

- CHCF was asked to report on after-school impact to the House of Representatives in March.

 

Child Care Services

- Parents who have utilized our child care referral service say they thought the quality of service was excellent, and they were happy with the information they received.

- 2,417 parent consultations for child care throughout New York City were provided.

- 1,695 day care providers were given technical assistance.

- Approximately 500 hours of intensive technical assistance were provided.

- 746 hours of training on infant/toddler topics were provided.

- 100 providers were members of our Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP).

- 75 providers are members of our child care provider network, Conexiones entre Familias/Connections between Families, which offers intensive technical assistance, training and resources for providers and families.

- For the fourth year, CHCF hosted the only Spanish-language family day care provider conference, Cuidando Nuestros Niños/Caring for our Children. 7 concurrent workshops were offered to participants.

 

Youth Development

- In total, CHCF served 1,110 children and their families in this program area.

- After-school Programs:

- Parents of children in our after-school programs reported on evaluations that the program helped their children with homework, and behavior, and has broadened their interest in extracurricular activities.

- CHCF served 670 students through its 4 after-school programs at schools in the Bronx. These programs were located at PS/MS 279, PS 306, PS 59, and PS 333/335.

- CHCF's After-School Program at PS/MS 279 was named one of the top ten after school programs in the city, according to a study by Policy Studies Associates. 

- Helena Yordan, Site Coordinator of the CHCF After-school Program at PS/MS 279, received the prestigious PaseSetter Award from the Partnership for After School Education.

- CHCF served 80 middle school students through an "out of school time" (OST) program at PS/MS 279. The theme of the program was CSI: 279 and it focused on science and forensics.

- 5 students from PS 59 were featured at a United Nations exhibit regarding reactions to the Millenium Development Goals.

- Drop Out Prevention Programs:

- Children in our drop out prevention programs have attested to the impact our staff has had on their motivation to attend school, set goals, and achieve grades.

- CHCF served 290 students through its 3 drop out prevention programs at schools in the Bronx. These programs were located at PS 333/335, MS 391, and Christopher Columbus High School.

- CHCF's Drop Out Prevention Program at MS 391 was identified as a model program in New York City for its success in engaging families and improving attendance of participants.

- The Salsa, Sabor y Salud program enhancement was offered to families. This enhancement provided an opportunity to engage entire families in healthy eating habits and physical education excerises. 57 individuals (33 adults and 24 children) participated.

- A career day was hosted at PS 333/335

- 9 students from the CHCF Drop Out Prevention Program at Columbus High School attended the United Nations Youth Forum to raise awareness of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.

- An Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention program was added to the Youth Development Program. The program served over 150 students at the Walton Educational Campus, which consists of 6 schools.

 

Family Health Education

- Proyecto Gol:

- 2,012 individuals were reached through our van campain.

- 7,008 individuals were spoken to directly about HIV/AIDS prevention and/or domestic violence through outreach and community education workshops.

- 9/11 Recovery Services and Case Management:

- 30 individuals participated in Círculos en Apoyo (5 series, 3 levels). Participants expressed that the groups improved their eating habits, sleeping habits, they cry less often, and they feel supported by people who have similar experiences.

- 67 individuals attended community education workshops.

- 694 individuals were reached through our van campaign.

 

Latino Family Policy Center

- CHCF organized the Summit on Latino Families, which brought together a multi-disciplinary group of 111 Latino service providers, scholars, parents and advocates to provide recommendations for enhancing community-based, culturally competent Latino child welfare family support services throughout New York City.
