HARLEM GLOBETROTTERS HELP KIDS IN THE BRONX HONE THEIR BASKETBALL SKILLS

Verizon Wireless enables kids from The Committee for Hispanic Children and Families’ Youth Development Programs to learn some moves with the “World’s Most Loved Basketball Team”

New York, Feb. 10, 2005 – Eighty children from The Committee for Hispanic Children and Families’ (CHCF) Youth Development Programs had the opportunity to meet members of the Harlem Globetrotters and learn basketball skills, as they participated in a special basketball clinic held on Friday, February 11, 2005 at 4:30 p.m. at PS/MS 279, located at 2100 Walton Ave. in the Bronx.

PS/MS 279 is the site of a CHCF after-school program, part of the organization’s school-based Youth Development Programs. Currently operating at three schools in the Bronx, this program provides safe, developmentally appropriate and educational after-school care that complements the school curriculum. A Family Literacy Program, which brings together students and their parents on Saturdays to read and create stories about their families and a dropout prevention program are also offered as part of CHCF’s educational initiative.

“What we always try to show in all of our programs is that learning can be fun,” said Elba Montalvo, CHCF Executive Director. “Whether it is basketball, reading, or writing, we prepare children to lead successful and happy lives. We are honored to partner with organizations like Verizon Wireless and the Harlem Globetrotters to improve the future for our children and our community.”

“Our commitment to the community runs deep,” said Charles Hand, president of Verizon Wireless’ New York Metro Region.” Giving area children access to world-class athletes, like the Harlem Globetrotters, is just one part of our ongoing HopeLinesm program. We salute the CHCF and the fine work they do for families.”

Eathan O’Bryant, Otis Key, and Mike King of the Harlem Globetrotters conducted the basketball clinic funded by Verizon Wireless. The clinic not only featured drills to improve basic basketball skills, but also lessons on how to perform some of the Harlem Globetrotters’ world-renown tricks.
