THE COMMITTEE FOR HISPANIC CHILDREN AND FAMILIES, INC. RECEIVES $312,000 AWARD TO SUPPORT LONGER-TERM RECOVERY NEEDS RELATED TO SEPTEMBER 11th Non-profit organizations throughout the United States to benefit from the American Red Cross Liberty Disaster Relief Fund New York, Mar. 8, 2005 – The Committee for Hispanic Children and Families, Inc. (CHCF) has announced that it is a recipient of a $312,000 September 11 recovery grant from the American Red Cross Liberty Disaster Relief Fund. The grant will allow CHCF to continue to provide resources for immigrants affected by September 11 to cope with the effects of the trauma. “Latin American immigrants who were working and residing in Lower Manhattan on 9/11, including those who participated in recovery efforts, have suffered disproportionately as a result of the devastating events of September 11 due to the economic downturn, the rise in unemployment, and the widespread anti-immigrant sentiment that followed. We are committed to ensuring that they have a viable resource to help them cope with the lasting effects,” said Elba Montalvo, CHCF Executive Director. “We are pleased to be able to partner with the September 11 Recovery Program so that we can continue to respond to the needs of Latinos throughout the city.” Features of CHCF’s Abriendo Puertas a Nuevas Comunidades (Opening Doors for New Communities), CHCF’s new immigrant-serving unit, include: • The Van Campaign – Addresses the lack of information in Spanish about resources such as disaster aid, mental health services and other social services, health care, job training, and other topics of vital interest to this community. • Círculos en Apoyo (Circles of Support) – Non-traditional mental health support groups for 9/11 victims and their families, as well as other new immigrants. •
Mental Health Intervention – Identification
of clients who require more individual and directed mental health services
and crisis intervention, and who can then be referred to a mental health
clinic by one of clinicians. The American Red Cross September 11 Recovery Program provides assistance, support and guidance to those most directly affected by the September 11 attacks. Current services include case management, financial assistance for mental health and health care, support and information groups, and other financial assistance. Through immediate disaster relief programs and funding of longer term initiatives, the American Red Cross September 11 Recovery Program has helped more than 57,000 individuals and families, in 48 states and 57 countries. The Red Cross also provides community-based organizations with funding to enhance longer-term, local services for people affected by the tragedies of September 11.
