THE COMMITTEE FOR HISPANIC
CHILDREN AND FAMILIES RECEIVES GRANT TO SUPPORT New York, Mar. 31, 2005 – The Committee for Hispanic Children and Families, Inc. (CHCF) has been selected by the March of Dimes to receive a $17,675 grant to implement its new program, Proyecto Cigüeña (Project Stork), designed to address unmet maternal and child health needs. “The goal of Proyecto Cigüeña is to improve the knowledge and the health of recent female immigrants of childbearing age in order to protect the next generation of New York City Latinos,” said Elba Montalvo, Executive Director of The Committee for Hispanic Children and Families, Inc. (CHCF). “It is of utmost importance that women take care of themselves before and throughout pregnancy and we are committed to providing the knowledge, tools and resources,” said Montalvo. Proyecto Cigüeña (Project Stork) consists of outreach to immigrant Latinas about sexual and maternal health topics and available resources in their community and language. It would provide enhanced education and support services, such as testing and treatment, to Latin American immigrant women in New York City through the usage of the Comenzando Bien curriculum. Comenzando Bien is a culturally appropriate, bilingual prenatal education curriculum for Hispanic women. The goal of Proyecto Cigüeña is to improve the health status of the women and prevent birth defects and mother-to-child transmission of STDs. The March of Dimes is a national voluntary health agency whose mission is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects and infant mortality. Founded in 1938, the March of Dimes funds programs of research, community services, education, and advocacy to save babies and in 2003 launched a multi-year campaign to address the increasing rate of premature birth. For more information, visit the March of Dimes Web site at marchofdimes.com, its Spanish Web site at nacersano.org or contact Dionne A. Durant, LMSW at 212-353-2371. Since 1982, The Committee for Hispanic Children and Families, Inc. (CHCF) has been dedicated to improving the quality of life for Latino children and their families. Believing that the most effective way to serve Hispanic/Latino families is by building upon their existing strengths and fostering self-sufficiency, CHCF provides a number of programs and services to the community. These include bilingual childcare referral services, childcare provider training, after-school programs and education programs for new immigrants on HIV/AIDS. For more information about these and other programs and services, contact CHCF at 212-206-1090.
