Audrey Puente speaks about the importance of reading.

New York, Mar. 25, 2005 – The Committee for Hispanic Children and Families After School Program at PS/MS 279 announced that an opening ceremony for its Masters of Literacy program was held on Monday, March 28, 2008 with Audrey Puente, CBS 2 meteorologist and feature reporter, served as keynote speaker. Ms. Puente spoke to the children and their parents about the importance of reading.

“CHCF’s after school programs have historically been very successful in bringing children and their families together in a love of reading, and the Masters of Literacy grant from TASC is instrumental in making this activity possible again this year,” said Danielle Barranca, Deputy Director for Programs for The Committee for Hispanic Children and Families, Inc.

The Masters of Literacy program infuses the after school program with literacy-related activities designed to bring parents and children together to read and appreciate books. The opening ceremony was held at PS/MS 279 located at 2100 Walton Avenue in the Bronx at 3:30 p.m. Following the keynote speech, Ms. Puente read with children and then presented each of them with a book, courtesy of Scholastic, and a hand-held electronic Spanish/English dictionary courtesy of Franklin Electronic Publishers.
