2006-2007 Program Accomplishments

General

  • In November 2006, Elba Montalvo was named one of “20 New Yorkers Who Have Made the City a Great Place to Raise Children” by New York Family Magazine.

  • CHCF has received a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator for a second consecutive year. Only 15% of the charities rated have received at least two consecutive 4-star evaluations, indicating that we outperform most charities in America in our efforts to operate in the most fiscally responsible way.

  • In October 2007, CHCF was named NY1 ’s “NYer of the Week,” an honor awarded to organizations and individuals giving back to the New York City community.

  • CHCF was featured in the “Contribute 200: Your Guide to Investor-Worthy Charities” by Contribute New York Magazine . We were ranked number nine of the 24 Children and Youth organizations featured in the guide, which lists and ranks the top 20 charities in the New York/New Jersey/Connecticut area.

Child Care Services

  • 3,891 parent consultations for child care throughout New York City were provided — 1,474 more than last year!

  • Child care providers received approximately 819 hours of intensive technical assistance from CHCF staff, helping to make their programs more well-rounded and enriching for the children in their care.

  • CHCF hosted the fifth annual family day care provider conference, the only professional development event for family day care providers in the city to be held entirely in Spanish.

Youth Development

  • CHCF served 830 students in after-school programs, 290 students in drop-out prevention, 75 students in responsible fatherhood, and nearly 500 students in adolescent pregnancy prevention programs. We’ve added new programs and expanded existing ones to better serve the needs of the communities.

Family Health Education

  • 917 individuals were reached directly during outreach at churches, consulates, and events about HIV prevention and domestic violence awareness through Proyecto Gol ( Project Goal ) and the DoVE Initiative (Domestic Violence Prevention).

Latino Family Policy Center

  • On March 13, 2007, CHCF hosted a briefing for New York City Council Members on the disproportionate representation of Latino families in the child welfare system.

  • On June 5, 2007, CHCF released a report at City Hall titled “Bridging the Cultural Divide: Building a Continuum of Support Services for Latino Families,” which examines the needs of Latino families, the current gaps in the continuum of child welfare services, and glaring funding inequities. Recommendations to address these urgent problems were also introduced.

  • With funding from the New York City Council through the Immigrant Opportunities Initiative , CHCF provided classes for 330 individuals in Civic Education & U.S. History and assisted 43 individuals with the N-400 citizenship application.
